Anglo Platinum to layoff hundreds of SAfrica workers

Anglo American Platinum will layoff 275 workers at its South African operations after talks of redeployment failed, the company said on Thursday.

“We engaged all stakeholders to explore retrenchment avoidance, that is re-skilling and redeployment. These options as well as the offer of voluntary separation packages have been declined,” company spokeswoman Mpumi Sithole told national news agency SAPA.

The world’s largest platinum producer which operates several mines in South Africa said the layoffs would not affect the company’s productivity.

Last month, the firm announced it will temporarily halt production after low prices made operations unviable.
