Prague is to rename a square where the Russian embassy is located after Boris Nemtsov, a former Russian deputy prime minister and opposition leader killed in 2015, authorities said Friday.
“TOP 09 councillors will back the renaming of the square… where the embassy is situated to Boris Nemtsov Square,” tweeted European Parliament member Jiri Pospisil, head of the TOP 09 party in Prague.
The other major parties represented in the Prague city council have also voiced support for renaming the square.
Czech media said the vote could be held later this month and the square could be renamed on February 27, the fifth anniversary of Nemtsov’s murder.
Prague councillors, led by a mayor from the anti-establishment Pirate party, recently sparked uproar with another foray into foreign policy.
Prague pulled out of a twinning agreement with Beijing last October in protest at Chinese insistence on a one-China policy. In January, it penned a partnership agreement with Taipei instead.
