A group of what is rumoured to be between two and five hooded men entered The Funky Dogo bar, in the Hotel Olympus building in Vilamoura yesterday evening, doused it with petrol and set it on fire.
Emergency services were called at 18:45, and over 40 operatives, supported by 15 emergency vehicles, were on site with the concern that the violent flames could spread through the Hotel Olympus building.
According to reports, “a group of Englishmen armed with guns, batons and gasoline ordered customers to leave and set fire to the bar”, however this has not yet been confirmed by the police.
Staff and customers inside the bar had time to leave, so there were only a few minor of injuries and sixteen people were assisted by INEM due to smoke inhalation. However the premises suffered major fire damage.
The perpetrators of the fire fled the scene of the crime. For now, the authorities say they do not know the identity of the suspects, knowing only that when they entered the bar, they spoke English.
The case has been handed over to the Judiciary Police, who will determine the motivation for the crime and endeavour to catch the perpetrators
