Two dead, six missing as fishing boat sinks off Spain

A Portuguese-flagged fishing boat ran aground off Spain’s northern coast before dawn on Monday, killing two of the nine crew and leaving another six missing, rescuers said.

The vessel ran aground on the island of Erbosa, half a nautical mile off Cape Penas, which juts out into the Cantabrian Sea, maritime rescue services said. It was left semi-submerged.

Only one of the Santa Ana’s crew, a Spaniard, had been found alive, the rescue service said in a statement. He was picked up by another fishing vessel operating in the same area and taken to a hospital in Luanco, northern Spain.

The nationalities of the other eight dead or missing were two Portuguese, two Indonesians and four Spaniards. Rescuers were searching by sea and air for signs of other survivors, the maritime rescue service said.
