Seven people suspected of committing cyber attacks against government bodies and the police were arrested in Portugal Thursday, prosecutors said.
The perpetrators are alleged to have hacked into the websites of the public ministry, the judicial police, the judicial oversight authority, the press card commission and utilities group EDP-Energias de Portugal, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.
The arrests were made during more than twenty raids in the capital Lisbon.
According to local media reports, journalist Rui Cruz, founder of “Tugaleaks”, the Portuguese version of “Wikileaks” linked to the hacker group Anonymous, was one of those arrested.
Portugal’s press card commission said on February 3 that it had been a victim of a cyber attack after which the contact details of some of its members were circulated over the Internet.
