ANTANANARIVO, Jan 17 (AFP) – Two Frenchmen were killed when their small ultralight aircraft crashed in Madagascar about 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of the capital at the weekend, civil aviation authorities said Monday.
The two men – Alain Dumay, 41, the general manager of a fishing concern and France’s honorary consul in the western Madagascan town of Morondava, and Patrice Majchrzac, 54, a retired French soldier – were killed instantly in Saturday’s crash, officials said.
“An eyewitness saw the motorised ultralight flying without power about 50 metres (yards) off the ground, then it started to spin and crashed violently on the ground,” said Francois Randriamahandry, Madagascar’s civil aviation chief.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, he told AFP.
