NIAMEY, Feb 22 (AFP) – Late French filmmaker and ethnologist Jean Rouch, considered the father of African cinema, will be buried on Tuesday in the Niger capital’s Catholic cemetery, officials said here.
Rouch was killed Wednesday in southeastern Niger in a traffic accident. He was 86.
Niger President Mamadou Tandja was expected to attend his funeral, the director of Niamey’s Franco-Niger cultural centre, Laurent Clavel, said Sunday.
Born in Paris in 1917, Rouch’s career spanned a half-century and included some 120 films, including anthropological classics such as “Myself, a Black,” which earned the prestigious Louis-Delluc award in 1958, and “The Mad Masters”.
Rouch was in Niger for a festival of the country’s cinema, to which he had contributed a retrospective of his work in west Africa since the 1940s.
