GRENOBLE, France, Jan 19 (AFP) – The risk of avalanche remained high in the southern French Alps Monday, though the meteorological authorities downgraded the level of alert from the maximum in force since Saturday.
“The snow covering is stabilising and the risk of spontaneous avalanches is diminishing. But the snow remains sensitive to the movement of skiers. Extreme caution is advised for cross-country and off-piste skiing,” said Gerald Giraud of the state forecaster Meteo-France.
Caution was also advised in the northern Alps, Meteo-France said.
