MADRID — Spanish prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has been almost unanimously re-elected leader of the Socialist party, it was reported Monday.
Zapatero garnered nearly 96 percent of the vote from delegates to the 36th PSOE Federal Congress in Madrid, which ended Sunday.
Zapatero, who has served as prime minister since April, was re-elected secretary-general of the party in Saturday’s session from almost 1,000 participants, the highest rate of support for a PSOE leader since the party’s founding 125 years ago.
The PSOE came to power in the March 14 elections in which it routed the conservative Popular Party (PP), which had led Spain for the previous eight years.
