Zapatero proposes European alliance

28 April 2004

BERLIN-Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero proposed an alliance between Spain, Germany and France Wednesday.

Zapatero put forward the ambitious plan during a meeting with the German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in Berlin.

He suggested the three countries present a resolution to the United Nations Security Council over Iraq.

Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos had brief talks in Berlin with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, who was in the German capital for a conference on anti-semitism.

The new Spanish premier is due to fly Thursday to Paris for talks with French president Jaques Chirac.

Zapatero is also scheduled to meet with his Portuguese counterpart, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, on 4 May.

These visits are among several trips to European nations that Zapatero, who took office earlier this month, has planned for the coming weeks.

Zapatero is also expected to fly to London to meet British prime minister Tony Blair.
