Prince urges Spaniards to end terrorism

16 March 2004

MADRID – Crown Prince Felipe asked Spaniards Tuesday to “redouble efforts” to end terrorism.

The Prince, in his first public speech since the 11 March attacks, also condemned those behind the massacre.

The Prince made the comments as he was presenting prizes for industry.

He dedicated the prizes to the victims, their families and all the professionals and volunteers who helped after the attacks in Madrid Thursday.

The Prince said: “We must all redouble our efforts and show our determination to end terrorism and show our love for freedom.”

Hours after the attacks, Queen Sofia, the Prince and his fiancé, former television presenter  Letizia Ortiz, visited a hospital in Madrid to try to offer comfort to the relatives of those who had been killed or injured.

The King made a live television address to the nation the same evening expressing his condolences to the families of the victims and urging “solidarity” among Spaniards.
