16 March 2005

MADRID-Police in northern Spain have seized drugs worth EUR 350,000 and arrested 17 members of the same gang.

The operation – codenamed Chameleon – has also led to the seizure of 215kg of cannabis, 400g of speed, 813 Ecstasy tablets, codeine, kitchen scales, four high-performance cars, computers, EUR 6,000, a pistol and other arms.

Raids were carried out in Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country.

Carlos Rubio, regional head of the national police, said they had arrested the head of the gang.

Rubio said the same man was arrested in 2002 in Aguilar de Campoo, in Palencia, in northern Spain, for cocaine dealing.

The operation began in September 2004 after an investigation into a drugs gang based in Malaga and Marbella, in southern Spain.

One Moroccan has been arrested in connection with this part of the operation.

Eight of those arrested were detained in an apartment in Gijon, in northern Spain, along with one high-powered car, 15g of cannabis, 800 Ecstasy tablets, 200mg of speed and EUR 4,000.

A woman, who was arrested in a town in Cantabrias called Maliano, had 200kg of cannabis hidden in her garage.

Police said the operation was still underway and there could be more arrests.
