Family stabbed to death in own home

8 June 2004

BURGOS – A couple and their youngest son were found murdered in own their home, police said Tuesday.

Salvador Crisanto Barrio Espinosa, 53, his wife Julia Dos Ramos Santamarina, 47, and their son Álvaro Barrio Santamarina, 12, had multiple wounds.

They appeared to have been murdered at some time on Sunday or Monday morning, though their bodies were not discovered until late Monday.

Neighbours said the couple had another son aged 16 who is studying outside Burgos, a city in the west of Spain.

Cristanto Barrio Espinosa worked as a farmer and was known as good-natured and easy-going.

Police believe the family may have been attacked by someone who wanted to “settle accounts” or by someone who broke into the house. They do not believe it was a case of suicide.

But no neighbours reported hearing any suspicious noises.

One relative said: “I suppose it could have been a madman who did this.”

Salvador Crisanto Barrio worked near Burgos in La Bureba, owned three tractors and had just bought a combine harvester.

The family also had a house in Galicia in north-west Spain.
