A 21-year-old German injured in the weekend’s Love Parade disaster has died of her injuries in hospital, bringing the death toll to 20, police in Duisburg, western Germany, said Monday.
Earlier Monday, prosecutors said that the number of injured had risen to 511 from an earlier estimate of 340, adding that one of the 42 people still in hospital was in a critical condition.
Prosecutors are investigating the disaster after claims that warnings that the city was too small to host one of Europe’s biggest techno music festivals were ignored.
The mayor of the German city of Duisburg has faced intense pressure to quit two days after Saturday’s deadly stampede at the Love Parade festival.
Twelve women and eight men died on Saturday as they scrambled to escape from a crush in a narrow, 100-metre (yard) tunnel that served as the only entrance to the festival grounds.
The dead were aged between 20 and 40 and included seven foreigners, from Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, China, Bosnia and Spain.
Mayor Adolf Sauerland, who staunchly defended what he said was a “solid” security plan at a news conference on Sunday, was reportedly pelted with rubbish.
