Bold, but maybe a bit too old

15 March 2004

ESSEN – Police in the German city of Essen said Sunday that a break-in at a supermarket was a routine crime but that one thing about it was a bit unusual – the suspect’s age.

Police said they nabbed an 80-year-old man after he had gone to the trouble to first break into one shop, and then break through a wall to the supermarket next door late Saturday night.

The octogenarian’s bold plan went awry, however, when he tried to make his getaway. Loaded down with eight shopping bags filled to brimming with stolen goods, the senior citizen was a bit too slow as police, alerted by a burglar alarm, arrived on the scene.
