Continental relocates meeting after egg attack

Lille — Tyre firm Continental said Thursday it will move its next works council meeting from northern France to the Riviera because, at the last meeting, angry workers burst in and pelted managers with eggs.

"It seemed impossible to hold the works council meeting in Reims … for obvious security reasons," a spokeswoman for the German-owned company said, adding that the meeting would be held in Nice on Tuesday.

Last week, Continental workers burst into a management meeting in Reims and pelted their bosses with eggs to protest the closure of their plant at Clairoix, north of Paris.

Outside other workers had staged a symbolic lynching of an effigy of the company’s director.

On Wednesday, Continental workers burnt tyres in the streets of Paris, where they had come to meet with advisors of President Nicolas Sarkozy to discuss the closure of their plant.

A works council is a forum in which managers meet worker representatives to discuss company issues.
