Record drugs bust in Belgium

5 May 2004

BRUSSELS – The Belgian authorities have seized a record 1.6 million ecstasy pills in the country’s largest ever haul of the synthetic drug.

Reports of the bust, which happened at the end of April, emerged on Tuesday evening.

The ecstasy pills were discovered in a secret narcotics laboratory in the Flemish town of Knokke-Heist, the Bruges public prosecutor said on Tuesday.

Police have charged eight people – five Britons, two Belgians and a Dutchman – with manufacturing, possessing and selling ecstasy, selling cannabis and money laundering.

An ecstasy tablet sells for around EUR 1 on the Belgian market, EUR 10 in the United Kingdom and EUR 25 in the USA.
