BRUSSELS – Just a week after Belgian child killer Marc Dutroux was jailed for life, a French man living in Belgium has admitted to kidnapping and murdering six children, it emerged on Wednesday.
At a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Liege Prosecutor Anne Thily said Michel Fourniret, a French forestry worker living in Belgium, has confessed to killing six children including Elisabeth Brichet, a 12 year old who disappeared in the Belgian city of Namur in 1989.
The girl’s father Francis Brichet said on Wednesday that he had been told how his daughter had been, “kidnapped, raped, killed and buried immediately.”
He said finally knowing what had happened to his daughter was a relief.
Fourniret has actually been in police custody for over a year.
He was arrested after he tried to kidnap a 13 year old Congolese girl in the town of Ciney.
But up until now the Frenchman had not confessed to any murders.
Fourinet’s confession came shortly after his wife, Monique Olivier, denounced her husband to the police, saying he was responsible for nine murders in France and Belgium, reports said on Wednesday.
According to private broadcaster RTL-TVI Olivier decided to talk to police after seeing Dutroux’s ex-wife sentenced to 30 years in jail for trying to cover up her murderer husband’s crimes.
Fourniret is a known paedophile.
He has already been found guilty in France of sexually abusing children and was given a seven-year prison sentence for child sex crimes by a Paris court.
