BRUSSELS – If you are one of those infuriating drivers who persistently leaves their car in no-parking zones, you should consider moving to the Belgian city of Mons if figures released on Friday are to be believed.
According to the latest statistics from the Belgian Justice Ministry, the Walloon city holds the Belgian record when it comes to letting people off for parking offences.
Over half of all the parking tickets issued in the city (51.2 percent) are never paid.
Instead the authorities simply write off the fines.
Charleroi, also in Wallonia, is almost as conciliatory when it comes dealing with parking pests.
The authorities there write off 47.9 of the parking tickets issued every year.
At the other and of the scale are the Flemish towns of Leuven, Hasselt and Vilvoorde.
The authorities there make sure that 80 to 90 percent of naughty motorists pay the full price for illegal parking.
