BRUSSELS – The Belgian police have raided two Islamist bookshops in Brussels as part of a Europe-wide operation against Islamic extremists.
The swoop was instigated by a German-led investigation “aimed at finding evidence linked to money-laundering for terrorist purposes,” said a spokesman for the Brussels prosecutor’s office.
He said no arrests were made at the two premises but confirmed that Italian and French officers had carried out similar raids at the request of the German authorities.
The German police on Thursday said they had raided homes, mosques and businesses on their own territory.
Police entered a total of 31 properties in Germany, as part of an investigation against two men suspected of money laundering, tax fraud and links to extremists.
