BRUSSELS – The court in Ghent has found that Fehriye Erdal, a member of the Turkish extreme left-wing DHKP-C group, may be tried in Belgium for her part in the killing of a Turkish businessman in Istanbul in 1996.
The DHKP-C (Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front) is branded a terrorist organisation by both the US and EU.
The woman’s lawyers are expected to appeal the ruling. Erdal herself is still fugitive.
The attack on businessman Ozdemir Sabanci, his secretary, and another director of the Sabanci company was committed by snipers hired in by the Marxist group. Erdal is suspected of getting the gunmen into the building using a personnel badge.
