These numbers, provided by the National Employment Office (RVA), were announced on Monday.
Deputy prime minister and Employment minister Kris Peeters (Flemish Christian Democrat) interprets these numbers as a “positive sign signalling the end of the crisis”.
In September 2014, 464,098 Belgians were unemployed, a decline of 2.5 percent in comparison to September 2013. Unemployment fell in all three Belgian regions.
Youth unemployment declined by 13.7 percent. However, the number of unemployed people above the age of 50 has risen by 5.2 percent.
Mr Peeters interprets these numbers as a “positive signal”. Especially the decline in youth unemployment, will give people “confidence in the future.”
However, the prime minister is aware that the unemployment of people above the age of 50 is an important issue that needs to be addressed.
“Developing a plan for the future together with all of our social partners could offer a solution”, Mr Peeters says.
