Belgian could face US death penalty

18 October 2004

BRUSSELS – A Belgian professor arrested in the USA on suspicion of killing his wife could face the death penalty if found guilty, it was reported on Monday.

French teacher Claude Vandeloise, 63, was arrested in Baton Rouge in the US state of Louisiana on Saturday after calling the emergency services to say that his wife had been taken ill while in the bath, reported Flemish newspapers Het Niewsblad, Het Volk and De Staandard.

When medics arrived at the Professor’s house, they found his wife dead.

A subsequent autopsy revealed she had suffered a brain haemorrhage, apparently as a result of a blow on the head.

Vandeloise was then arrested for suspected murder, a crime that carries the death penalty in Louisiana.

The professor taught at Antwerp University in the late 1980’s before moving to the United States.
