BRUSSELS – A total of 694 companies declared themselves bankrupt in January, representing a 10.7 percent rise on last year.
According to the public federal economy service (SPF), the number of bankruptcies filed in the last three months was 2024, an increase of 4.3 percent on last year’s figures.
However, this rise was not across the board as the number of industrial companies filing for bankruptcy fell by two percent.
In the construction industry, an increase of 14 percent was noted, while a rise of 2.5 percent in business and 1.8 percent in the catering sector were also recorded.
The number of failing transport companies went up by 0.6 percent.
