Antwerp profited from Rotterdam strike

18 July 2007

ANTWERP – The port of Antwerp handled 6.7 percent more freight in the first half of 2007 compared to a year earlier, setting a record of 90 million tonnes.

Most of the increase in volume was due to heavier container traffic at the port, boosted by the opening of the new Deurganck dock.

“The difficulties caused by strikes at the Rotterdam port also produced extra traffic to Antwerp,” the Municipal Port Company of Antwerp announced on Wednesday.
