12 deaths in weekend traffic accidents

BRUSSELS — A bloody weekend on Belgian roads claimed the lives of 12 people in various traffic accidents.

The worst accident occurred in Ath, Wallonia, where five youths from Cameroon were killed when their vehicle slammed against an electricity pole.

The accident occurred on Saturday morning when the working students were returning home, newspaper ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ reported.

Three of the victims died at the scene, while two others died later in hospital.

A Dutch couple was killed in a Zelzate on Saturday night when a truck collided with their passenger vehicle after running a red light.

The 60 and 59-year-old occupants of the passenger vehicle were killed, while the Czech truck driver escaped unscathed.
 
In several other accidents, five other people were killed during the weekend.

A 13th victim, a 47-year man, died of a heart attack while cycling with friends in Ouffet.
