The bench, which used to stand at the corner of the Leidsegracht and the Keizersgracht, appears in a key scene in the film The Fault In Our Stars.
The two main characters in this love story, teenagers who have cancer, visit Amsterdam and have a crucial conversation sitting on the bench.
It is thought that fans of the book on which the film is based have stolen the bench.
A council spokesman said the disappearance of the bench is a ‘mystery’.
‘It is not a publicity stunt for the film’ the spokesman told the Parool.
The council plans to replace the old bench with a new one.
The Fault In Our Stars is due in Dutch cinemas on July 10.
