Majority of Dutch unhappy with smoking ban

THE NETHERLANDS – A survey carried out by the Dutch newspaper AD has revealed that almost 60 percent of the population think there should be special cafés where people may smoke.

A majority of those interviewed said they think cafes and bars have become less enjoyable places since the nationwide smoking ban took effect. Four out of the 10 questioned say they now go out less than they did before the ban.

The smoking ban came into effect on 1 July and has since met with strong protests from restaurants, cafes, bars and pub owners.

However, non-smokers questioned say they are happy with the new measure.
