SCHEVENINGEN – The first barrels of soused herring have arrived in the Dutch port of Scheveningen. They are considered a delicacy in the Netherlands, where they are known as ‘Hollandse nieuwe’. The first barrel will be auctioned off on Tuesday to mark the start of the herring season.
Two ships headed for the north of the North Sea on 24 May and returned on Sunday with other hold packed full.
According to the fishermen, "It has been many a long year since they have managed to catch such good quality herring". The Dutch Fish Board praised the quality of the fish saying, "they are wonderfully oily".
