THE NETHERLANDS – The Netherlands is contributing EUR 1.3 million for the renovation of seven Palestinian prisons in the West Bank.
Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen has struck the deal with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who is improving the territory’s security and justice apparatus.
Verhagen says it is important that Palestinians are able to put their trust in the judicial authorities and the police. He believes that improving prison conditions is part of the process.
Palestinian prisons are in a poor state and often unusable. Sometimes ordinary houses have to be rented to detain prisoners.
